The Medical University of Lodz

The Medical University of Lodz (MUL) is the largest public medical university in Poland. It has over 70 years of medical tradition and there are more than 7 500 students attending different courses at MUL.

Medical teaching in English was initiated at MUL in 2003/2004. Presently, 840 foreign students from all over the world attend medical and dental programs taught entirely in English.

• University’s activity covers all areas of medicine, including clinical studies carried out in three university-owned teaching hospitals and numerous departments within other hospitals.
• Three teaching hospitals owned by the University with over 1600 beds make a grand base for graduate and postgraduate clinical education as well as for scientific programs. The additional 34 wards and departments (ca 1 200 beds) of municipal hospitals are used for teaching purposes.
  The University Teaching Hospitals and University’s affiliated departments constitute a basic source for highly specialized diagnostic and treatment services provided by more than 1 250 medical professionals including 750 specialist with professors and associate professors who deal with the health need of the Lodz region and promote health-related programs. Each year more than 55 000 patients are hospitalized in MUL hospital departments and over 50 000 patients in University affiliated wards.
  The high level of diagnostic and treatment services rendered by the Medical University teaching hospitals is reflected by its position in the most popular hospital rankings. In the nationwide classification, our 36 hospitals departments are ranked among the top ten in their specialties.
• Modern Medical Simulation Centre is located on 12 and 13 Floor of A-1 building of Clinical and Didactic Centre of MUL. It is here, in simulated clinical conditions with specialists phantoms and simulators, that future doctors, nurses and paramedics will acquire practical and team work skills. The newly-opened simulation center includes perfectly equipped emergency department, intensive care unit, operation theatres, labour and obstetrics wards as well as classes for technical training for students, particularly with future doctors, nurses and paramedics in mind. The main idea of the classes in Medical Simulation Centre is to provide joint training for medical teams at several levels and specialties of health care, ranging from nursing to specialists medical procedures e.g. performed during surgeries.
• The University is considered a leader in the number of scientific publications and citations among medical schools in Poland. MUL’s scientists conduct extensive basic and translational research, accumulating unique knowledge, benefiting from the clinical trials. The Medical University of Lodz has reached the leading position in the research areas such as immunology, molecular biology, genetics of homeostasis disorders, oncology, hypertension and endocrinology.In response to population ageing and demographic decline in Europe, the Healthy Ageing Research Centre (HARC) was founded in 2011. The Centre conducts interdisciplinary research on various aspects of healthy ageing. MUL has been consequently investing in the development of young researchers.
• The University supports internal initiatives helping young scientists to develop their career paths, allowing access to the most effective research teams, providing funds for publications, grants, as well as protection and promotion of intellectual property. Within the last two years, young researchers from our University were considered leaders in areas such as cardiology, oncology, immunology and dermatology.
