In order to apply for a place in popular university dormitories, you have to fulfil a few conditions. The main criteria for granting a room are the per capita income and distance between your home and the school. A students’ house is undoubtedly the cheapest form of accommodation. Prices for a single room is about 380-640 PLN, double room 330 - 440 PLN and a triple room 280 - 340 PLN. The cost of rental is usually influenced by the standard of the room you are to live in. Other advantages of living in a university dormitory are: good location (near the school, means of urban transport and student clubs), integration events, new contacts, a possibility to exchange information on the fields of study, exams, teachers, subjects or easiness in obtaining necessary notes. It should also be emphasised that the standard of the rooms rented in university dorm have improved in recent years. More and more higher schools decides to perform thorough renovation of their univeristy dorm, modernising the room equipment and substantially improving the conditions in which students are to live (building a gym and learning rooms, renovation of bathrooms and kitchens, better Internet connection, etc.).
University dormitories does not only mean fun and integration. The thing that may be an unquestionable advantage of living in a university dormitory for some people, for others may turn out difficult to accept and mean a great discomfort. Lack of privacy, limited possibility to choose a roommate, dirty toilets, shared fridges, control of visitors, limited visiting time, queues to a washing machine or kitchen, continuous parties next door, unexpected visits of roommate’s guests, noise — these are only some of elements inextricably connected with living in a university dormitory. You have to take them into consideration before you decide to apply.
You can find a list of university dormitories at subsites of each University, in the Universities section.
